Auto Insurance

Finding a good auto insurance policy might seem like just another chore, especially for busy New York residents. However, choosing a policy might be one of the most important decisions a person can ever make. Even the best drivers can get into accidents; all it takes is a moment’s inattention.

In best-case scenarios, the damage to both vehicles is merely cosmetic. Unfortunately, it is often much worse. Vehicular damage, injuries, and lawsuits can all add up to enormous costs, especially for the driver who is deemed responsible for the accident. The person causing the accident is not necessarily a bad driver; he or she may have simply made a mistake that anyone could make.

In any case, in today’s lawsuit-happy world, the driver who caused the accident can lose a great deal of money. Even if the lawsuit fails, there are still lawyer fees and other court costs. This is why it is so important to find a good auto insurance policy. This is especially true in busy places like New York.

Auto insurance usually has several different levels of coverage, which are as follows:

  • Bodily Injury Liability – This pays for the medical expenses of the accident victim, and is required in most states.
  • Property Damage Liability – This covers the costs of damage that the vehicle causes to personal property. While usually referring to cars, it can also mean houses, garages and anything else that might count as property. Like bodily injury liability, it too is required in most states.
  • Uninsured / Underinsured Motorist – This pays for the damages that result from an accident caused by an uninsured driver.
  • Personal Injury Protection – This offers medical and even funeral coverage for the buyer and his or her family in the event of a collision, regardless of fault. It also takes care of pedestrians who are hit by vehicles.
  • Collision – This covers the damage suffered by the car itself.
  • Comprehensive – A collision is not the only way that a car can suffer damage. For instance, when a car is damaged because of bad weather, the comprehensive level can cover the costs.
  • Other Miscellaneous Coverage – This varies depending on the insurance provider.

Drivers may be tempted to buy the cheapest car insurance option available, but this is not always the best idea. Cheap insurance cannot always provide the needed level of protection in the event of an accident. If something goes wrong, it is essential for the driver to have adequate coverage.

Most states, including New York, do not require residents to have extensive insurance. However, individuals who buy only the bare minimum of coverage are putting themselves at risk. If someone with minimal insurance causes a serious accident, his or her car, home, and even pension may all be negatively affected.
